<p>The Bears had the entire offseason to plan for their road
trips to home games, yet after one preseason game they are
already changing the itinerary. </p>
<p>For the team's game against Denver, the Bears bunked in
Decatur the night before the game, then had a bus ride to
Champaign. Told the ride would take no longer than 30 minutes,
it instead was more than an hour. Needless to say, no one was
happy. </p>
<p>"It was just a concern on the part of a lot of people that
the drive on game day was going to take more than what they
wanted to put into it," director of administration Bill
McGrane said. "We thought it would work and it didn't." </p>
<p>It was too late to change for this week's game against
Jacksonville, but prior to the season opener Sept. 8 against
Minnesota, the team will fly into Champaign and stay at a
hotel two blocks from the stadium. </p>

<p>Can Anaheim round up pitching help now that Aaron Sele has
gone down with a partial muscle tear in his pitching shoulder?

Sele wasn't great for the Angels this season (8-9, 4.91
earned-run average) but he did gobble up some innings. Salt
Lake recall Mickey Callaway, a former Devil Ray, will get the
first crack at replacing him in the rotation. <br>
<br>
Fellow Angels pitcher Ramon Ortiz won just once in a six-start
span, recording a 5.56 ERA in the process. So Anaheim could
use a fresh arm or two with the stretch drive looming and Sele
likely to miss three weeks or so. <br>
<br>
Also, the Anaheim offense has taken a hit with outfielder Tim
Salmon shelved by his hand injury. At least the Angels have
newcomer Alex Ochoa to plug in for him; his acquisition from
Milwaukee at the waivers-free trade deadline looks pretty
smart now. <br>

<b>AROUND THE AMERICAN LEAGUE </b><br>

Would-be Orioles ace Jason Johnson went 1-4 during a recent
seven-game stretch, perhaps owing to earlier shoulder troubles
this season . . . Before hitting the disabled list with
shoulder problems of his own, White Sox pitcher Todd Ritchie
suffered through an 0-4, 7.94 ERA stretch . . . The Tigers
wonder how they will ever attract a free-agent power hitter to
too-spacious Comerica Park. Nobody wants to end up flailing in
futility like Bobby Higginson is this season . . . After the
All-Star break, Mariners pitcher Freddie Garcia fell into a
2-4, 6.61-ERA slump . . . During a 13-game span, Yankees
outfielder Bernie Williams batted .517 and drove in 14 runs.
Then he was derailed by a sore hamstring muscle . . . On the
other hand, Yankees outfielder Rondell White has batted just
.209 with runners in scoring position this season. That's why
the club rushed into its Raul Mondesi trade. And to think that
this club could have dealt for Cliff Floyd, had George
Steinbrenner been more patient . . . Devil Rays pitcher Tanyon
Sturtze lost 13 of his first 15 decisions and allowed five or
more runs 10 times . . . After batting .348 in his first 54
games as a Red Sock, outfielder Johnny Damon hit just .228 in
his next 63 games. And now he's trying to play with a
dislocated finger . . . Teams that tried to land Blue Jays
pitcher Chris Carpenter before the waivers-free deadline are
glad they didn't. His season-long shoulder troubles make him
iffy for the September stretch run . . . Here's a weird
statistic on Rangers pitcher Chan Ho Park: No. 8 and No. 9
batters are hitting .313 against him this season. <br>

$30?"</p>
<p>"Pretty much," I said, "In fact you can bet on all of the four
bets at once. You can bet $1 on the 2, 12 11 and 3. The 2 and 12 pay
30 to one and the 3 and 11 pay 15 to 1. If you bet all four it's
called a horn bet. But, these are all one roll bets, so if the next
roll is anything except a horn number, you lose all four bets."</p>

Gail's Bette Davis eyes got even larger.</p>
<p>"What's that?" she exclaimed, "A Horn High?"</p>
